Taking care of your wellbeing when home for long periods of time

Here are some tips on how we can look after ourselves, physically and mentally, during these uncertain times, by Brydie Bruce, Co-Founder of The Mindset Project CIC.
Quote about how we can respond to situations

We are currently living in a very different time to what many of us have ever known. It’s important for us to acknowledge the emotions we are feeling because of this and to know that is ok that we don’t have all the answers right now.

However, we should remember that whilst we may not have control over many of the situations we are faced with, how we respond and react to them, is in our control.

The other thing to remember is this is not going to be forever.

Take some time to establish a new routine.

Put in place a routine for your day that helps with keeping active, in touch with others and feeling productive. These don’t have to be massive things, and you will find that some days will be better than others but having a routine will give you a sense of normality and doing things you enjoy will keep your mood lifted.

Keeping active is vital; exercising regularly will help to release the positive hormones in our body, which, in turn, will decrease feelings of stress and anxiety. It may also help with sleeping better too.

There are many exercises you can do in your home or garden, if you have access to one, and if you’ve got other people in your household, get them involved too. The more fun you have, the more you are likely to want to do it. Set yourselves challenges to see who can get the most steps in each day!

If you are on your own, why not join a local online group or contact a friend over the phone/video call and do a workout together.

Staying connected with our loved ones and friends will help to lift our moods. If you have access to and can, try to make contact by video calls so you can see the face of the person on the other end of the call. If you are online, search for and join groups that are involved in activities and hobbies you enjoy.

Of course, we should keep ourselves informed on the latest updates from the government, especially when advice and guidance has been changing frequently, but try to avoid spending too much time watching the news or reading stories on the internet, as this can heighten our anxiety and worry.

The same can apply to our social media pages; think about the accounts you follow. Mute or unfollow those that are causing you concern and follow those that boost your moods and put a smile on your face.

It is important that we stay connected with the outdoors too. If you have a garden, allow yourself some time regularly in the day to sit outside or walk around in the outdoors, but if you don’t have access to a garden, sit yourself by the window or stand at your front or back door.

Take in the sight and sounds of the world outside, feel the breeze on your face, listen carefully for the birds and allow yourself to be in the moment.
Remind yourself, this will not be forever.
